L'association Portamento

Emerging from the ever-fertile musical fields of Berlin with a name that cracks a sarcastic smirk befitting their musical ideology, Zukunft (German for future) formed as a trio in 2020 as a vehicle for exploring minimalist improvisation and avante-garde aesthetics. Since then, the band has steadily grown from its experimental roots into a tightly woven 4-piece unit that deftly weave the long-form, groove oriented approach of Krautrock, with the warm, sun-drenched tones of west coast psychedelia. Founded by singer/guitarist Mikey Sykes (Lemongrab / Düüns), drummer Adrian Bang (Aqua Nebula Oscillator / Telescopes), and bassist Ted Bernays, the band established itself playing a series of improvisational performances featuring guest musicians from around the Berlin music scene. Over time the group opened its approach to songwriting, embracing Sykes’ Californian roots, and began incorporating elements of psychedelic folk and country reminiscent of the cosmic sprawl of the Grateful Dead and the streetwise attitude of the Velvet Underground, all the while locked around propulsive drum and bass grooves passed down from
Kraut-monoliths Can and NEU!. There’s also evidence of many a night soaking up the sounds and techniques of Berlin’s experimental and improvised music scene, notable in contact-mic sonic mischief and spaced-out unpredictability in the spirit of Acid-era Miles Davis. Zukunft released their debut EP “Extended Play” in 2021, a 30 minute blast of motorik drums, throbbing bass, cutting guitars, and found-sound collages culled from a weeks worth of acid-fried improv and bits of tape left on the digital cutting room floor, all mixed into control under the watchful ear of Tangerine Dream’s Thorsten Quaeschning. 2022 saw the band refining it’s live show with performances around Europe and releasing “Cycles”: their first song featuring Sykes’ vocals and marking their transition to a song crafting approach that melds the lysergic improv of their early days days with dynamic genre-bending progressivism. In 2023 multi-instrumentalist Nicolas Bonadio and bassist Maxime Decombat joined the group. In October, the band, under its “Future Musik” concert promotion label, organized Future Fest: an all night psychedelic happening, inspired by the pioneering multi-media parties of the 60’s. March 2024 will see the release of a new EP supported by a tour across Germany, Switzerland, France, and Belgium.
